Jeff Nichols, Take Shelter (2011)
Definitely a great example of the recent evolutions of film genre ‘Southern Gothic’ (see also Winter’s Bone, Shotgun Stories, The Dynamiter), which explores the crude nature and contemporary life in the deep south of the United States, a territory that used to be ignored by the cinematographic industry; Take Shelter is surely one of the best american movies of 2011, even if completely overlooked by both Golden Globes and Academy Awards..same old story for good indie films.
What really strikes about this movie is, in my opinion, its simplicity..ok, even if it’s full of premonitory dreams and cryptic hallucinations, it is, in the end, mostly a movie about modern families internal and external dynamics, about love, fear, doubt and trust.
It has been said everywhere already but i’m gonna say it too: Michael Shannon’s performance is just supreme. He will truly hypnotize you.
